Under the former name "Klaus Berlemann GmbH" Berlemann distributes the first sliding gate systems in the 70s. As was usual at that time, sliding gates with wheels were guided on a rail in the passage.

At that time, the door operator was still attached to the sliding door as an external unit.

In 1981, Berlemann developed the first trend-setting innovation: a self-supporting door system that manages up to 10m clear width without a running rail in the passage. The DBGM sliding gate was born.

The chain-driven cantilever DGBM sliding gate made the laborious task of keeping the running track free of snow, ice and sand superfluous. In addition, the extensive foundation work for the running track was no longer necessary.

In the middle of the 80s Klaus Berlemann faced a great challenge. Röhm had requested two cantilever gate systems with a passage width of 14m. An order of magnitude in which Berlemann had no references to show. Nevertheless, Röhm ordered the "Röhmtor" with a lot of persuasiveness and a "money-back guarantee" and within 4 weeks.

Characteristic for the Röhmtor was the massive, multiple folded lower beam. With it cantilevered Röhmtore with a passage width of up to 16m could be constructed..

1994 Berlemann patents the INOVA drive concept, which has won several awards. The three-phase current drive accommodated in the lower gate spar makes components that are partly susceptible to failure, such as gall chains, gear racks or drive covers, superfluous.

In the year 1976, at the age of 24 years, Klaus Berlemann founds a locksmithing production in a former agricultural farm in Telgte. Focusing on highest quality and security from the beginning on lays the foundation for a success story that continues until today.

1981 marks the year were Berlemann develops a pioneering innovation: a gate system that bridges a bypass completely self-supporting, without bottom tracks and rollers.

The expansion stage

Administration building

In 1982, the “Klaus Berlemann GmbH” is registered in the commercial registers. In the same year, the company relocates from the placid Telgte to Rheine, with a considerably bigger production space of about 1,200 square metres. Berlemann remains for more than 12 years at this location.

In 1993, the capacities at the premises in Rheine are no longer sufficient. The expanding business with 30 employees requires a move to larger premises in Neuenkirchen, which are still today´s location.

24,000 square metres of site area and more than 3,000 square metres of production and office building offer the best conditions for continuous growth. In addition to the relocation, the “Klaus Berlemann GmbH” becomes “Berlemann Torbau GmbH”.

An ingenious twist: the inside gate drive system

The INOVA gate drive system is protected from the weather and manipulation and is located inside the lower beam of the door. It unifies the carrying and driving of the gate leaf in one compact unit. The focus of the development was on reliability, which was maximized by consistently avoiding maintenance-intensive and failure-prone components.

The drive unit is braced in the lower spar by means of an adjusting gear so that the 4 large drive wheels (left) press against the upper and lower sides of the lower spar. In the event of a power failure, the drive unit is swivelled via the setting gear and the door can be moved easily in manual operation via the four small emergency rollers (left).

The INOVA drive system has been continuously further developed so that the current generation of INOVA sliding door systems achieves an immense opening and closing speed of approx. 25 cm/s as standard. At the same time, they achieve unrivalled running smoothness and are hardly audible.

For a while, the competition does not take Klaus Berlemann´s efforts of integrating the gate drive system inside of the gate´s lower beam serious. But as soon as Berlemann receives a pioneering patent in 1994, his success silences his critics.

The inside INOVA gate drive system supersedes failure-prone components of conventional sliding gates, such as gall chains, gear racks or drive covers. Up to today, it sets high standards in terms of safety and reliability.

Quality has its price

It does not take long before the innovative INOVA gate operator attracts the attention of the experts. In 1996, Berlemann receives its first award for an exceptional cooperation between craftsmen and scientists during the development of the inset drive system: the “Professor-Adalbert-Seifriz-Preis”. The second award follows only one year later: In cooperation with the Münster University of Applied Sciences, Berlemann receives the “Münsterland Award for Innovation” for the development of the self-supporting sliding gate with inset drive system.

The next generation

Klaus Berlemann´s son Nikolaus Berlemann joins the family business in 1999, after completing a degree course in economic engineering. His main area of expertise are the INOVA fencing systems. Together with his colleagues, Nikolaus Berlemann makes sure that the INOVA fences are known throughout Germany and beyond. In 2009, Nikolaus Berlemann joins Berlemann´s management team next to Klaus Berlemann.

There are more solutions than steel

2012 marks the year of a new generation of sliding gates: Berlemann introduces the INOVA Silverline sliding gates made of aluminium. Due to the patented modular design, a unique manufacturing process allows for a cost-effective realisation of individual customer needs.

INOVA PeriNet - more than just an intelligent fence

With the introduction of INOVA PeriNet in the year 2014, Berlemann expands its business from purely mechanical perimeter protection through gate and fence systems to electronical perimeter protection by adding sensor technology.

The INOVA PeriNet security concept combines the latest electronical detection systems with matching mechanical security components to act as a safeguard against burglaries and jailbreaks.

Berlemann acquires Detection Technologies Ltd.

Ian Macalindin and Sam Berlemann

After many years of being the German distributor of Detection Technologies’ products, Berlemann acquires the British company in the autumn of 2017. Detection Technologies has an excellent reputation for its sensor based perimeter intrusion detection systems beyond the borders of Europe.

The perimeter intrusion detection systems detect and locate intruders climbing over and breaking through fences or other perimeter barriers. Considering the worldwide increasing needs for security systems, these detection possibilities are of great importance. A hardly recognisable integration of the detection systems within the perimeter system ensures that the aesthetic overall impression remains, despite the increased perimeter safety.

Berlemann’s many years of experience regarding mechanical perimeter protection with the help of sliding gates, swing gates and fence systems complement Detection Technologies´ vast experience regarding electronical perimeter protection perfectly. Berlemann can offer the right solution to every possible required perimeter detection and is ideally positioned for future chances and challenges.

Berlemann celebrates its 40th anniversary

In February 2019, Berlemann celebrated its 40th anniversary together with its customers and business partners. Coming from a small locksmith´s shop, founded in a former cowshed in Telgte, it has now become a medium-sized company with more than 140 employees. Started as a one-man-show, Berlemann now is a leading quality manufacturer of sliding gates, swing gates, fence and access systems. Berlemann celebrated this success story together with more than 200 customers and business partners in a marquee just built up for this special event on the company premises.

Berlemann also took the chance during its 40th anniversary festivities to introduce its latest invention to the industry: the INOVA folding gate. A characteristic INOVA product, as the folding gate is operated conspicuously inconspicuous by an integrated gate drive system. In addition to the introduction of the new folding gate all guests had the chance to visit Berlemann´s new in-house exhibition. The exhibition includes not only sliding gates and fence systems, but also 4-metre high ball guard fences to demonstrate the well designed netting.

Berlemann: A non-stop solution

An experienced team of more than 140 capable employees and highly automated production processes, both based in Germany, as well as a dense network of long-standing and valued INOVA distribution partners are the reasons that Berlemann is one of the European market leaders in the area of perimeter protection systems. Berlemann’s broad product portfolio of gate systems, fence systems, access systems and perimeter protection systems stands for quality, security and longevity.
